Those drivers who will use every means they know to make sure that they squeeze as many miles as possible out of a full tank of gas are called hypermilers. They have their own set of rules that they follow which they believe will enable them to go further on a gallon of gas than they otherwise would have. One of these rules that they follow that have many baffled is ‘no driving with shoes on.’
They say that when you drive without any shoes or socks you will have better control over the brake and accelerator pedals. This means that they will be able to gradually change speeds perfectly. It is a fact that gentle acceleration will help to greatly improve the cars fuel efficiency. The practice of not having shoes just allows for increased precision during this acceleration.

There is no law however in all the 50 states that say you cannot drive without any shoes on. There are actually some shoes, like high heels, that significantly decrease your driving performance. This is why hypermilers choose to go at it barefoot.
It is however totally up to you whether you want to drive barefoot or not as it is not illegal.

This article is not intended to put down senior drivers. Many older people are very good drivers, and they use their maturity and experiece very well. In fact, insurers consider people in their fifties and sixties as a lower risk group. But as older people start to hit seventy or eighty, some of them develop health problems that may raise a red flag.

Some older people are still good drivers.
People age differently. Some 80 year olds are still very good drivers, and these days, many of these older people still commute to work!
